JEAN CHAWAPIWA

Jean has extensive experience in external affairs, communication and media in the mining sector, which included work on several divestments and acquisitions. She is passionate about helping entrepreneurs and mentoring women and young professionals to play a growing role in Africa’s development, as part of this she continues to sit on the Board of Junior Achievement Africa (JA Africa). She was the first woman to sit on the South African Chamber of Mines Executive Council where she sat for over 6 years ending December 2012.

She chaired the Chamber of Mines Communications Committee; also previously sat on the Board of Rio Tinto Management Services; and American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa (AmCham). She has 3 Diplomas in Business Studies (UK); Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) and Journalism (SA) and has been in leadership development programmes for BT, CSIR and Rio Tinto. Jean has spent over 10 years in executive management with portfolios across Africa with Rio Tinto, Barrick Gold and Placer Dome.
Jean’s success is underpinned by the golden thread of her experience and her Africa business networks, which connect businesses to opportunities. Her consulting projects have included strategic communications, change management and customized research support for mergers and acquisitions.
